KeymasterHello and welcome,
Did you check with the Gomirje monastery and the archives online?

KeymasterHello and great to see you back again with this much progress.
There are different branches of the Šukunda family. One in Croatia and one in Bosnia. Although I do not believe that related from what I know. Something to consider when doing research in Croatia is that in case there isn’t an Orthodox church around a lot of Serbs got baptized in the Catholic church as they kept records for the Orthodox rite as well. I know a there were some casualties during the second World War. You might also want to look in the area of Momčilovića Kosa as there were territorial changes in the municipal areas there.
The surname was first mentioned in the books there around the XVIII century in Brezovo Polje.
Some info here that might help; just use Google Translate 😉

The area was heavily contested between the Austro-Hungarians and Ottomans.
Let me know if this helps.

KeymasterWith the new year upon us we are looking to open some positions as we need to fill some gaps with the growing demand on our website. Do you know of anyone that would be willing to join the team? Please let us know!

KeymasterYou can check the articles and the Archival Network we have on the site and contact the archives in Zrenjanin directly if you want.

KeymasterWell, despite the fact that you read on the news it is not that bad that this person could not do research. But, from what I see this person is in Serbia and not Montenegro. And taking a trip down, which would be required as none of the archives are digital would take him several days. And he would need to know which archives to access etc. But if I read this email correspondence they hired someone else in Montenegro. All together, they could claim anything but you cannot verify anything.
This is the reason we don’t advertise researchers, it is hard to check if said person would really do the work or not. And, we don’t offer an escrow service of some kind.
As for doing research in Montenegro. I just was in Herceg Novi, but I do not know of any researchers there.
You could ask your money back, if you did it via Paypal see if you can escalate the payment?

KeymasterYea the no response part is normal to the region. Nothing we can do about that. You can use the search option on the website here and read up on Slava’s if you want to. Other then that I would recommend hiring a researcher in the region.

KeymasterSome more details would be welcome, e.g. from where did you get the death certificate? Did you check Ellis Island?

KeymasterOk, this is an important thing to know. That way when you encounter people with the same surname from that region you can differentiate if they are related or not. Family Saints are used for this, and the women always take the Family Saint from their men when they get married. The archives from Croatia are microfilmed and I think accessible online to some extend.

KeymasterDo you know what the family patron is?
