KeymasterWe receive many requests if we as a society can do research. As we have stated many times on the forums and other subsequent pages the society does not do hired research. The main reasons for this are that we are not a commercial orgnanization, nor do we have the resources for this. As a society we seek to empower people to do their own research. The logic behind this is that people become more aware of their cultural heritage and it claims a sense of ownership. Other reasons for not doing research are that citizens of Serbia are free to access the archives whenever they want. However, for foreigners there are restrictions. One must first obtain permission of the Serbian Government before one can access the archives.
The SGS has many members, of which many help each other on a voluntary basis. We encourage this as it fortifies the genealogical community. However, it is perfectly allowed for SGS members or people registered as users on this site offer paid services. Please note that SGS members are expected to adhere Serbian Law and the society’s statutes. By not doing so this may lead to a cancellation of ones membership. The SGS as an organization cannot be held responsible for any disputes.

KeymasterJust as in the vast majority of other European countries the majority of Serbian surnames are patronymic. This means that the surname Jovanovic would be derived from one of the ancestors with the name of Jovan. In some very rare cases you can see the metronymic naming, but this is very rare.
The way surnames originated can be diplayed on the following way:
Patronymic; naming after one of the ancestors,
Occupational; naming after ones profession e.g. Strugar,
Geographical; being named after a geographic location,
Descriptive; being named after a special physical feature inside ones family,
Anecdotal; being named after a particular event in ones live,The majority of surnames in Serbia end with –vić. However in 9-10 cases most people with the same surnames are not related at all. Names like Jovanović, Petrović, Djordjević, Pavlović etc. are comon surnames all from Patronymic naming. Since names like Jovan, Djordje, Petar and Pavle are comon surnames in Serbia its more then normal to see Patronyms of these names.
The confusion factor
So if my surname is e.g. Djordjević or Jovanović then my ancestors were Serbian? Not exactly, patronyms named you after your ancestor. And Although in many cases the above would be true it does not give you a garantuee. For example, there are many Roma families with the above surnames. They might have Serbian surnames, but they are not.
The geographic distribution of a surname is also confusing. The surname Petrović is being used inside Serbia and Croatia. Actually, in Croatia they use the same similar naming system as in Serbia. There are however surnames that are typically Serbian, but a 100% garantuee you never have until you research.

KeymasterThe house of Vlastimorić
Named after Knez Vlastimir, supposedly to be the great great grandson of an unknown Archont. This Archont was a great leader of the old days. He lead the Serbs from White Serbia (located in modern day Poland, Slovakia and Ukraine) into the Balkan peninsula. This happened around the year 610-641 during the reign of Byzantine emperor Heraclius. The Archont led successfully campaigns against the Avars. As a reward for his services Heraclius paid him and his people with the lands of Rascia / Raska, Zachumlie/Zahumlje, Trebounia/Travunia, Zeta/Duklja, Bosnia/Bosna and Pagania/Paganija, which were barren at that time according to the “De Administrando Imperio”. The unknown Archont died in †680 A.D., striving clan leaders displaced him from power after the initial settlement. Internal struggle led to the fragmentation of the early Serbian state.
The house of Vlastimirović became Serbia’s first dynasty after the settlement of the Serbs. Their reigned from ca. 640- ca. 950, of which apr. 100 year under a different dynasty and later in the 9th century a short period under Bulgarian direction.

His daughter married knez Krajina, son of Beloje, župan of Travunija (Trabounia). Each son had his own domain, but Mutimir, the eldest, was the supreme ruler, his two brothers served under him. The brothers successfully fought off a Bulgarian onslaught by khan Boris in 852. The two youngest brothers rebelled against Mutimir. As a punishment he subjected them to Bulgarian khan Boris.
Knez Mutimir ruled from the second half of 9th century to his death in †891/ 892Strojimir (vassal to elder brother Mutimir, later under Bulgarian khan Boris)

KeymasterSerbian surnames usually, but not always, have a suffix. With suffix we mean endings of the surname like: -ić in Latin and –ић in Cyrillic. The endings of the surnames usually indicate to mean “son of”, as in Scotland we use “Mac” and so on.
The patronymic system isn’t only used by Serbs but is also common with other Slavic nations. There is an estimate that about 2/3 of all Serbs use the above system with their surnames. This results in many equal surnames between non-related families.
The most frequently used surnames are: Jovanović, Nikolić and Petrović.
Serbian immigrants to the U.S or other English speaking nations usually have a –ich.

KeymasterEllis Island
Ellis Island is useful for those in Diaspora, descendants of those who have immigrated to the United States. Ellis Island is a harbour in New York close to the Statue of Liberty. From 1892 until 1954 this Island was used as a terminal for those who wanted to settle in the United States.
When new immigrants arrived they were subjected to a medical examination. Only those who were qualified were allowed to enter, others were send back. On the website of Ellis Island more information can be found about the Island that played such a crucial role in the history of many families.
Of all those families that entered records were kept. These records have been scanned in an can be accessed through the internet. Many errors have been made in the days when people entered the US as immigrants. Names were not spelled correct. So under no circumstance copy and paste the information you find on the passenger lists.
In order for you to do research in Serbia about your ancestry you must first have depleted the researches in the US. Double check the data that you have with personal items, family pictures, documents and other items in your family’s possession. Only after determining the correct spelling and date of birth of your ancestor we advice you to start writing the archives.
Zarevac
KeymasterAlways use sources. This cannot be stressed enough. Mention your sources in the footnotes, so that it will empower the next generation to have a point of reference for future genealogical research. Be objective.
Every family has its high period and low periods, ancestors that make you proud but also ancestors that don’t make you proud. It is very important with sources to use them correct. Do place them in the correct stratification.
Your family could be wealthy in 17th century, but poor in the 19th century or vice versa. Do then also try to explain the source of wealth or poverty. When doing this use the spirit of that age as a background.
Personal memoirs of family members can be useful for “tasting” the sphere of those times. Using the guidelines above will guarantee you enjoy doing research and learning from your ancestors.

KeymasterMembership in the SGS allows you to do more on our site then regular visitors can do. You get access to the member section and you can do the following:
- Letter templates to write to the archives,
- Translations on the SGS forums,
- Possibility to post confidential info on the SGS forum which is not a public forum,
- family page,
- SGS magazine with the latest news and updates from Serbia concerning genealogy and heraldry,
- contacting other members to assist you in your research,
- archival network
- attaching files to the forums
- and more,
Most of the members in Serbia hardly use the internet because they have the luxury to live close to an archive of church parish. The membership with online resources is moslty used by international members however we have seen an increase in Serbian members due to the new features we are offering now and in the near future.
What does the SGS use the membership fee for?
To keep this site running costs money. All membership fee’s are being spend to keep the site running. With a simple fee of 25 Euro’s per year you can use the services we offer. The fee is low compared to other sites, this is also because the SGS is a non-profit organization. Since we work with volunteers we basically keep the site running through the membership fee’s.
So is SGS membership for me?
If you need more help then a simple information request then the answer would be yes. All forums besides the SGS forum are public forums on which we give general information and where people can post general inquiries. If you need help with translating letters and books, contacting the archives, need someone to call a relative for you in Serbian etc. then membership is the best solution for you. Your contribution will help us to contribute more for the online resources. We always warn people that the archives of Serbia are not microfilmed, research takes a lot of time because of this.
