Its been a while, but thanks to this forum and website our long trek into looking for family members started back in 2012. I am back for more punishment.

We have over the last 10 years done the best we can. I have hit an impasse and can't seem to crack the eggs to go further.

Firstly if anyone is interested in the ŠUKUNDA surname feel free to access our family tree http://www.sukunda.eu/familytree/ which is now quite extensive.

So where we are stuck, my great great grandfather Duka Sukunda (we are guessing he was born 1840/1850's) it could have been spelt Đuka, Djuka (short version of Đurađ / George). We know he had 4 sons, my great grandfather and great uncles.

He had 4 sons Nikola, Pero, Simo, Aleksa, we know he came from Brezovo Polje (to our knowlage) near Glina in Croatia. We know they were Serb's and patron saint was St George.

We can not find any records for him though 🙁 - I got from Sisak/Croatia records sent to me and found many people of the same surname (all Sukunda's regardless if they are directly linked or not linked to us have been entered in our family tree).

He is probably in an Austro Hungarian archive somewhere, as the croatian archives do not go past 1890's there abouts.

We also know that the earliest mention of our Surname is Moisije Sukunda who was a monk/priest in the monastery Komogovine 1771 which was listed in an Austrian Document, excerpt from Izvor: Građa za istoriju vojne granice u XVIII veku: Banska krajina, 1690-1783; autori: Slavko Gavrilović, Radovan Samardžić.

We are stuck!!!!

Any help to get us over this hurdle, discovering any record of Duka Sukunda would be appreciated!

Who knows even a detailed record of Moisije may bring fruit.

Just as a by the by, thanking this forum again, many people around the world with our Surname have managed to contact family they thought they never had.

Cheers,

Stojan.

I forgot to add the majority of other information came from Sisak, they had 140 Sukunda details, period covers 15/17 years 1885 to 1900. Zagreb has microfilm for that area from 1857 and Glina 1900 to 1940.

Hello and great to see you back again with this much progress.

There are different branches of the Šukunda family. One in Croatia and one in Bosnia. Although I do not believe that related from what I know. Something to consider when doing research in Croatia is that in case there isn't an Orthodox church around a lot of Serbs got baptized in the Catholic church as they kept records for the Orthodox rite as well. I know a there were some casualties during the second World War. You might also want to look in the area of Momčilovića Kosa as there were territorial changes in the municipal areas there.

The surname was first mentioned in the books there around the XVIII century in Brezovo Polje.

Some info here that might help; just use Google Translate 😉

https://banija.rs/banija/14206-poreklo-prezimena-selo-brezovo-polje.html

The area was heavily contested between the Austro-Hungarians and Ottomans.

Let me know if this helps.
