To those of you who are searching family in Croatia. Please check the Family History Library of the LDS church. They have almost finished microfilming in Croatia and you can now search all records, including the ones of the Serbian Orthodox Church.

Now lets pray the Serbian government will give them access to our archives before they rot away.

    Stephan,

Thank you. We need members, the more members the better. You should keep in mind that the Serbian archives are a mess, I regret to say. The government neglects them and microfilming is proceeding very slow. Only a small % is on microfilm but the rest is rotting away.

They are broke(archives) and have no money. The worst part is that the microfilming can be done for free like it has been done in other European countries. But the government doesnt want to. The Serbian Cultural organizations both at home and in diaspora dont care about the archives, or dont want outsiders in it. Basically in ten years from now we don’t need any archives any more I think if not acted fast.

We are working on it as a foundation. The society lets people do research into their own family disregardles of their ethnic, religious or policital background. We are one of the view organizations that doesn’t imply religious identification if you understand what I mean.

As for the speed of the email. I dont know if they read them. I know that no one picks up the phone in Belgrade lately. The other archives are doing better in other cities but things look bad.

Anyway’s, I wish you good luck. If you need further help just post.

    Stephan,

You need to be contact with the archives in Belgrade and ask them for further info. You need have the Serbian nationality, and the records need to be cleared, this usually happens after a couple of decades.

Click on the top link on the left side of our frontpage, that will direct you to their site. Email them(see their footer page) and then all you can do is wait.

In my case registration with the Royal Court in the Netherlands has validated the arms on my fathers side. My mothers side in Serbia is a different story.

    Djuro,

Ok no problem. My wife’s family is from Dalmatia as well, and they used to be Uskok’s so I make sure not to get them angry ;-)

Its good that you have went already to Otisic. I think the best place to do family research is there at the local churches and monasteries. So next time you are there talk to the priest and check the Croation archives as well. They will give you access I believe.

As for doing research in Serbia, a lot of groups migrated during the period you mentioned. A lot of them still have contact with each other and the other ones don’t. Most of the time the families moved together to the same place. So I dont know where you live now, but when it is in Serbia you can go to the Opstina and the local archives there to check things out.

As for the Mac, I use a PC with Windows. Can’t help you out on that one.

    Regards,

    Hello Djuro,

The surname Rnic is from: Otiši&#263(Otisic);, near Benkovac, Dalmatija. Church Sv. Pantelija

The surname is being used there and in Serbia as well where Dalmatian Serbs also migrated to.

    Hope this helps!

PS You need to change the encoding of the internet page to Easter European.

    Sheila,

Good to hear you agree with the fee. We have one person for Serbia soon, and we already found a researcher in Bosnia in the Tuzla region.

Anyways, anybody else who wishes to comment please do!

You can, but its difficult. Usually write the institute handling them and leave it on their discression. Belgrade cemetaries e.g. are online.
