    Literally:

    Novo => New
    Selac(Selo) => Village

    Something like new villager, but it doesnt make too much sense if you dont change the syntax in English. As for the story behind the name, you would have to do research and see who adopted the name and what the situation was at that time as in relation to assuming a surname in th 18th century.

    Današje stanovništvo kopaoničkog podgorja konsolidovalo se naseljavanjima u XVIII i XIX veku, sa zapada (iz crnogorskih brda, Herzegovine i predela stare Raške ) na jednoj i jugozapada (s Kosova, iz Metohija ie Pologa u Makedoniji) na drugoj strani.

    Yes, the most chances of finding information would be through Ellis Island. Your surname is a Serbian surname from Dalmatia, Croatia. THe family originally comes from Vrlika, Polača and Civljane gornje. Also known as the Knin area.

    Antonio,

    The ring is not from Yugoslavia. I didnt recognize it and our herald didnt either. I think its from Europe but I will see with some people to assertain its origin. There are more then 10.000 arms out there so lets see if they know something straight away. If not then we will need to see if its listen in Rietstap or Siebmachers.

    You would have to write the archives in Kikinda and approach the churches there. Most likely family that remained behind are still living there.

    Hi Lauren,

    The correct spelling in Serbian would be Janković.
    Did you check with Ellis Island or do you have any birth data on where he was born? That way it will help narrow down your search. The surname is derived from the name Janko, which is a comon name that can be found all over Europe.

    Hope this helps.
