Yes but there is too much generalisation here. Surnames are being given to someone who is named after something/someone. See: http://www.rodoslovlje.com/voyager/novo/showarticle.php?articleID=49

In your case Lukovic is from Lukaj. But there are also many that are named Lukovic and that not come from Lukaj and there is no relationship between them at all. I object to simple deductions as these because on other forums they lead to heated discussions.

I don’t know untill how far you did you genealogy but in that region Serbs and Albanians have more in comon then they realise, they also share ancestors.

As we do in our surname database, please mention the name of the town the family originates from in order to prevent confusion.
Otherwise its nice to see you all post here. Which reminds me to ask since my Albanian is not that good. We are looking for an Albanian translator for translating this site also in Albanian.

Well believe it or not, in the good old days farmers were very respected and had a decent life. Some of them had substantial amounts of land earned in their service in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

There is a lot of info on the surname Dimitric, do you have more info to provide like name, date of birth and a place so we can provide more information?

Ok that would be “ermines”. I will see if I can locate arms from the Yugoslavia region. It would help if you can retake the picture with a higher pixel count. You can upload larger files then this one. It will make it easier for me to identify the other arms as well. Or if you could describe all the symbols on there that would help as well.

There are man JANKOVIC’s ….. JANKAJ’s (ALBANIAN) from albania. also JANKAJ’s-JANKOVICS in montenegro that come from ALBANIAN around 200-300 years back.

LIVAR, BAR that village is an albanian village with JANKOVIC-JANKAJ’s

Yes but the larger nothern part of Albania used to be part of MOntenegro and many Albanians there are of mixed stock and most placenames there are originally Serbian but translated into Albanian. Just because borders change doesn’t mean that the origin of a name or ethnic background change, thats a comon error. Especially since Jankovic doesn’t come from Jankaj but from the Latin name Janko!!

Do note that 300 years ago Albania was not a State, and that although today the relations between Serbs and Albanians are sour they were not 300 years ago.
We are adding the Albanian variants of placenames and surnames to our database, since there are a lot of things we have in comon and its not just “names”.

I just saw your email. Who gave this ring? And from what country? I need to know this because there are several arms with crescents out there so it would help if you can give me some more information.

    Dear Antonio,

    I attached the ring here.
I can see 3 crescents I believe in the middle. Do you happen to have a better scan of the ring? If so please attach here so I can study it better.

Most likely the people that received it dont speak English. So you need to write the letter in Serbian (but that is not a garantuee anyone will respond), you can join the SGS, we offer a letter template and help people out with their translations. We also call for people on occasion to the archives to inquire about send letters to see if they arrived or not. I would recommend though to send the letters with some form of tracking so you know they actually arrive there. It is not really the US e.g. where letters always arrive.
