Well there is a problem with that approach. Serbian/Montenegrin coat of arms are just like all other arms not attached to a surname. So its possible that there is a Volkovic family with an coat of arms, but its also possible that there are 3 families with the same surname and with different coat of arms. Identifying family genealogy through coat of arms without documentation is tricky.

Now the Montenegrin archives are not digitally availible. So you would have to write them/call them in order to get information.

We have a database of coats of arms for society members, and we are still adding info to it. I dont know if there is a Volkovic in there or in Siebmachers.

Is Wolkowicz the original spelling, do you have other spellings? The Turks did do frequent raids so it is possible. The best source would be the archives of Montenegro.

You could check it with the phonebook but either way these are small towns and you couldn’t miss them when you would go there ;-)
If you write them just write to the Serbian Orthodox Church or Serbian Catholic Church with the name of the saint attached and it will get there.

Well, there can be a ton of reasons why he choose for that surname. Surnames are usually taken to honor someone or to give away a family trade whatever. The only way to figure it out is to look at the first guy who took that surname.

I am working on a DNA project for the SGS. It can give some hope to certain people in the future.
