Alavanja and Zezelj are indeed from the Benkovac region in Dalmatia.

    Some more info I found:

    ALAVANJA-MIRANJE GORNJE I DONJE-SV.JOVAN
    ALAVANJA-KASIC
    ALAVANJA-KULA ATLAGIC
    ALAVANJA- Perusic

Alavanja was also recorded in Ugljanu 1611 as Halavanja.
The highest density of people with this name is in the Benkovac region, some of them moved inside Croatia and Serbia. The name is most likely derived from a Turkish word.

    What does EllisIsland tell you?

Spanovic is from indeed from Montenegro from a place called Sotonici& Gradjani. You can acces all the data through the Montenegrin archives.
As for Bejlic, it doestn ring a bell.

    Marco would be Marko
    Daniel would be Dragan

Its possible they were Catholic, if so also check with the Catholic church in those areas. Do you have a link to Montenegro?

I’d say most likely Montenegro. Its comon that families migrated from Montenegro into Serbia and then Dalmatia or the other way around.

The SGS is expending its team. Therefore we are looking for a new crewmember. Because of the nature of the position we made a list of specifications. This is a voluntary position.

    1. Be fluent in Serbian and good in English,
    2. Live in Serbia-Montenegro or any of the surrounding countries,
    3. Frequently online,
    4. Have experience with genealogy
    5. PC knowledge
    6. Be objective

We expect the candidates to follow the SGSs` statutes namely:

    Article 2

    1. The society’s goal is to promote and stimulate genealogy and related sciences in the broadest sense of the word in Serbia-Montenegro and the rest of the region. To supply resources both online and offline for the general public and members.
    2. To assist the archives in promoting and assisting in genealogical research in the broadest sense of the word.
    3. The creation of genealogical databases in cooperation with the archives of Serbia and other related institutes in accordance with the law of the state of Serbia.
    4. The society does not have a financial gain and serves the general interest; it therefore remains politically independent, and will provide in objective research.
    5. The society can not accept donations from political institutes that can jeopardize the independent and objective status of the society.
    6. To assist in reuniting families that have been scattered due to the civil war in the former-Yugoslavia.
    7. The society also provides for humanitarian aid in the broadest sense of the word.

The candidate should not be engaged in any political activities that can harm the SGSs` status.

As return the candidate will receive free membership. He/she can participate in building up the online content on the rodoslovlje.com website.

People who are interested can contact the Board of Directors through the online contact form. Please attach your CV.

Although we do not allow politics on our forums sometimes we cannot escape the effects of politics. The way it seems now is that Kosovo might become independent this year or early next year.
Now as to the why’s and how’s thats for another site ;-)

The thing that is important is that because of this the status of the archives there remains obscure. As we know the Serbian government took part of the archives with them but they are not open. We hope that these archives will be deposited at either the Krusevac or Kraljevo archives so people can continue to search for their ancestors.

We do not know what will become of the information for sure, but it makes research a lot harder for anyone of any ethnic background. When we have more news on the status & whereabouts we will post it here.

When you marry you assume the patron of your husband.
Its possible to belong to a brotherhood or that one of your ancestors was part of a brotherhood. Currently the usage of clans and brotherhoods is only used in the rural areas of Montenegro and south Serbia. If there is no knowledge in your family of belonging to a brotherhood that its clear that your branch didnt activly participate in a brotherhood for some time.

Also check the article section on surnames. Its possible you are named after a brotherhood but that there is no bloodrelation whatsoever.

We are now bridging our galleries with member accounts. That means that members can now post images as well in their own (private) galleries.

    Hi,

Well it makes a reference to the archives of Montenegro and nothing more then that so you will have to do deep research into that one.

    ARHIV CETINJE
    UL; NOVICE CEROVICA 2
    81250 CETINJE

This is the address of the Montenegrin archives.

    Good luck.
