I have some questions for you.

Did you try searching the LDS family history Library. Croatia’s archives have been microfilmed completely in contradiction with e.g. Serbia’s archives which havent been microfilmed.

    As for your questions:

    1. What is the earliest date you can backtrace the surname Prostran? And is there a difference between the first names used in the different families?

    2. Partially, e.g. the Serbs in Dalmatia always lived there and some of the moved to Krajina. Others in Krajina came from Kosovo around 1700 and others came from Bosnia. The problem with doing genealogy amongst Serbs is that our archives are in a terrible state. Its a disgrace what can I say. A lot of Serbian surnames originate in Montenegro, however there are a lot of duplicate surnames even Brankovic and others that are not related at all.

If you can answer the question on when the surname Prostran was first used I might be able to help out further. Please also tell me if you live in the region because that might help you in case I direct you to the archives.

I am glad to say that we will include census data in the database. Already we have around 200 names now in there and we hope to have 1000 in there by the end of the month.

Well, it depends on how you write the name. Please tell me if there is a little “v” above the S or not. It could be an Italian name. There are Italians living in Vojvodina and Skala is an Italian name in that region. That would explain a lot.

Found some more info. Your family originally comes from Dalmatia–>Ljubač, Plavno. Please check if you have a family saint with the name of Saint George.

    Hello Charles,

I checked the immigration records and this is what I found:

    First Name: Stanko
    Last Name: Cvijanovic
    Ethnicity: Hungary, Croatian
Last Place of Residence: Maljevac, Hungary
Date of Arrival: Aug 16, 1912
Age at Arrival: 27y Gender: M Marital Status: M
    Ship of Travel: Ivernia
    Port of Departure: Fiume
    Manifest Line Number: 0004

The Ethnicity states Hungary, Croatian. That is because at that time those parts fell under the Austro-Hungarian Empire and all that lived in the territory that was adminstred by Croatia (part of that empire at that time) were named as Croatian. But the family is ethnically Serbian.

I attached a copy of the immigration document. His name is on line 4 with additional data.

Also a picture of his boat, the Alice on which he came.

The current Maljevac is in Croatia in an area which we call “Krajina” ( http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?formtype=address&searchtype=address&country=HR&addtohistory=&city=Maljevac ) The area is mainly inhabited by Serbs that guarded the borders against the Turks for 500 years. It is a border town next to the border of Bosnia. Its located close to Slunj. The area was heavily hit during the last Balkan wars and many refugees fled to Serbia proper.

The Cvijanovic family origanally comes from Ljubač, Plavno in Dalmatia and part of Montenegro. The question is from where your ancestor came. Do you have any other documents of relatives naming other places? I will check to see if there are any Cvijanovic still living in Maljevac.

    Charles,

Go to the SGS forums and post there all the info you have. If you want you can attach a scan of the document you have.

As for the members fee, the webmaster adapted your fee and halved the time of the membership, so if you want to extend it you can either wait untill it ends next year April I think.

    Hello Tina,

Yes you would have to know from what they came so it will narrow your research. It is a surname that appears to be used frequent. You can find them in Serbia, Montenegro and even Bosnia. I am not sure in what sense these would be related. but if you have more information after you check with the Church records I am sure we can help you out futher. You can use the links on our link page for the phonebook to see how frequent the surname is being used and where.

    Regards,
