The surnames you mention originate from the region of MOntenegro, Zahumlije and partially Kosovo. The Grba family originates from Gorica, Maoce, Lecena and Markovac. Most likely they moved westward and northward due to the Ottoman incursions.

    Hello Peter,

As you might have known Kosovo went through some troublesome times. Most Serbs fled the province. Do you have any other info on your fathers side that can give some more insight(if you dont want to post them here PM them to me)

As for your mothers side, you can write to the archives in Subotica and they can give you more information provided that you have their full names and date’s + place of birth.

Do you happen to know your family’s Saint?

    Regards,

Just read it as it is. The last “c” you pronounce like the beginning of the word chair.

    Hello Viki,

I moved this thread to the Vojvodina forum since it fits here.
    As to your questions.
    1. SPanish Gypsy can mean anything, it is very well possible they were Gypries but you will need proof.
    2. Pancevac literally means : someone from Pancevo, in the male form of the word
    3. Born in Budapest? I don’t know what does his birth certificates say?
    4. Wars, most likely none since he was born after WWI and moved to the US before WWII
    5. We have dog tags in Serbia yes.

Hope this helps. I think you will do best in writing the archives of Pancevo. Good luck.

Well from the info you gave before I make the following assumption since there are not many facts to go on. So I would take your research this way. The Toth side were DonauSchwaben in the north of Vojvodina. There is also a Slowak population there and Pucovsky sounds more like a Slowak name to me. However, as I said before the spelling of the name in this case is crucial because even one letter change can make the name shift from Slowak to German or even to Polish for that matter. It could also have a profound impact on the geographical part.

Somehow you must find their place of origin(not the port of departure). Since this info is only stored with the US immigration you will need to do some hairsplitting research there before you can go on. Otherwise you will be making assumptions and that will only damage your research. If you know they came from the Pancevo area and you have their birth info then write to the archives there and see what they can come up with.

Thats all I can advice with this info.

Gorcevic is a Serbian name. If he signed the document with Milan Gorcev Gorcevic then most likely his fathers name was Gorcev.

Pancevo is 30 minutes from Belgrade (not close to the Romanian border), its an industrial city. The best thing you can do is to write the archives there (see message list topic).

It is very well possible they were Roma (Gypsies), because Gorcev is a Gypsy name. When you write to the arhives name his full name and his place and date of birth.

Was the Pucovsky the name that was written on the migration record? In this case the correct spelling is important.
